In the Pyrenees Mountains, the inland Pays Basque, also known as Basse-Navarre, reveals a wilder and less touristy aspect of the region. Here, nature unfurls in all its splendour: luxuriant forests, mountain passes, peaceful villages and hamlets… Each one stands out like a real corner of paradise, inviting visitors to (re)discover the region’s rich diversity.
Far from the bustle on the coast, the Basque hinterland hosts villages in which traditions are proudly perpetuated. Let yourself be drawn by the renown of Espelette whose pimento spikes dishes concocted by the greatest chefs, and immerse yourself in the uplifting atmosphere of the Villa Arnaga in Cambo-les-Bains, once the home of writer Edmond Rostand. Stroll through the narrow streets of Ainhoa, a real picture-postcard of Basque architecture, before falling for the timeless charm of Sare, one of “The Most Beautiful Villages of France”. Then climb on board for a ride on the emblematic “Train de la Rhune”, offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding mountains. Continue your getaway to Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port, a fortified town and an essential stopover on the Saint-Jacques-de-Compostela pilgrim route, before enjoying a tasting session in the terraced vineyards of Irouléguy.
The inland Pays Basque also draws nature-lovers and fans of strong sensations. Along with many hiking paths, it offers a variety of sports activities: mountain biking, quad bikes, motorcycle racing, paragliding… All ways of exploring and appreciating the region’s lush scenery. The most daring will try their hand at rafting or canyoning in the rapids of La Nive. Then, as reward follows effort, treat yourself to Basque cuisine, generous and authentic, just like the locals. Kintoa ham, Banka and Ossau-Iraty trout are to be relished wholeheartedly on local markets or in restaurants. For total immersion, take initiation in Basque “pelota” and enjoy village fetes. Then, and only then, the spirit of the Basque country is revealed and touches everyone’s heart.
